Windsurfing: Berrow sands Wind Direction: wnw Wind Stength: f6 Surf / Sea State: Air Temperature: Sea Temperature: Weather: Max Speed: Distance Covered:
Driving down to Burnham in still conditions & vertical rain i was hoping
the low was moving across quick & the 27knts showing at west Wales would
soon be in the Bristol channel. There was no sign of wind untill i pulled up
at Burnham,Whilst i was checking it out on the beach stu arrived, it looked
good 5.7m wind, with stronger gusts.Neither of us had sailed here before &
Berrow off to the right on the point looked alot windier & wavier,so we
drove up there.
It was f5 now,so i rigged 5.7m & 85lt,RJ turned up, buy the the time i'd
suited up the wind had increased a bit & on walking down to launch i knew
it was now 5.0m weather,i had 1 run out anyway being way overpowered, nice
vertical head high ramps everywhere.
A quick change down to 5m & 76lt, again as i launched i was was very
powered up, so 1 run & back in for loads of d/haul & outhaul.I was still
overpowered but wanted to sail & not mess with kit all day so stuck with
it.
The sea state was Ace ,overhead high ramps of all sorts, some crumbling
others really lipping to throw you skywards.Depending how far you wanted to
sail out on the sand bar 10 big jumps every run were to be had on the
starboard tack out.port tack jumping on the way back was also excellent,
coming up the steep vertical ramps many backloops were tried.but now was
time to change down to 4.5m.
With a flat 4.5 the gusts were still a challenge but manageable.with
frontside rides, massive jumps, 1 handed jumps(1 inadvertently bearing off &
landing nose 1st was a heart in the mouth moment) table top'ish, backloop &
sailing many runs side by side with Stu this was the best session for ages.
I was gonna rig 3.8m as it was now that windy but the tide was already
dropping.
Stu called it a day after 3hrs & now the tide had dropped a fair bit the
waves were now only knee high on the inside, so backhand down the boom i
went for a forward, after 10 ish (& not getting round) attempts i called it
a day, but on the last little wavelet on the way back in,as i hopped over
it my back foot came out of the strap, ripping my legs apart, the mast
smashing my face, it was the most ridiculous stupid but painful wipeout ive
had,with a bloody nose,teeth nearly knocked,swollen top lip,& barely being
able to walk i called it day,but what a day...(glad i had my lid on)
missed sailing with John C.
